Witch Hazel (Hamamelis vernalis)
A true harbinger of spring in New England, the southern witch hazel blooms long before winter is over. This shrub, planted near the Water Department buildings, is especially early. It is growing among a group of northern witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) that bloom in late October and November.
