Red Berries

Many plants have evolved the ability to produce red berries that alert hungry birds to an easy meal. Birds can carry seeds from the fruit long distances in their guts before eliminating them, intact and ready to grow. The berries shown above are on shrubs and a small tree (the hawthorn) that were planted in 2002 near the Water Purification Facility. By spring the berries will probably all have been consumed.
