Tall Ironweed, Veronia altissima

The intense purple coloration of these Ironweed flowers makes them stand out against the more subtle colors of Joe-Pye Weed and Boneset (visible in the background) in the Water Department bioswale. Upon close examination it can be seen that each individual "flower" is actually composed of many small, tubular, five-petaled flowers
