Interrupted Fern, Osmunda claytoniana

The gaps in the middle of these fern fronds are not the result of a problem: This fern bears its spores on the middle pinnae (side branches), which are smaller than the ones above. They produce spores, turn brown, and wither early in the summer, leaving the characteristic interruption that gives the fern its name.
