American Filbert or Hazelnut, Corylus Americana
Squirrels, chipmunks, and other rodents will compete for these nutritious
treats when they are ripe. The nuts inside the green leafy cover are
the same as the ones we can buy in the supermarket. Both the American
Filbert and another species, the Beaked Filbert (Corylus cornuta)
are native shrubs that grow to about 8 feet tall and can be found growing
in clearings and along roadsides.
