American Goldfinch on Bull Thistle (Cirisium vulgare)

This goldfinch is feasting on thistle seeds, which it pulls off of the feathery "parachute" to which the seed is attached. In the process of eating, the bird serves the plant's reproductive needs by pulling apart the seedheads, allowing the wind to carry away uneaten seeds.
