Trout Lily(Erythronium americanum)
A large patch of these delicate looking native wildflowers is growing
within 10 feet of Sousa's Rock. The fact that they have survived the
impact of dogs running off leash is a testamony to their toughness.
Trout lilies are called "spring ephererals." The leaves and
flowers appear early in the spring before tree leaves grow and block
out sunlight. The plants die back during the summer and do not appear
again until the following spring.
Trout lilies are
also called dogtooth violets, but they are true lilies, not related
to violets.
