Using Cameras to see Time
May 14, 2005

Participants in this program had an opportunity to see the Reservation in a new light-literally. In this photo they are wearing near-infrared glasses, with lenses that block out all light rays except those in the near-infrared range. The second photo is taken with a near-infrared lens on the camera. Clothing dyes and other substances that absorb heat (i.e. infrared radiation) look darker than ones that reflect heat. We also used "Plant Stress Detection Glasses" through which healthy plants look darker than plants that are weak or stressed.

We visited a "Picture Post" that has been placed at Black's Nook. The goal of this project is to collect in a database digital photographs taken by people who visit Fresh Pond. The post supports the camera in 8 precise directions so that over time a series of photos taken in one direction can be become a record of seasonal and long-term changes in the environment. Instructions for submitting photos are on the post.
