Indian Pipe, Monotropa uniflora
These ghostly woodland plants, which were found growing near the Perimeter
Road in back of Neville Place, do not contain chlorophyll. They are
saprophytes, which means they get their energy from dead plant material.
As the flowers begin to fade, they turn upward and develop an urnlike
pod containing seeds, before turning totally black and withering away.
