Common Loon, Gavia immer
It is unusual to see this shy bird in urban areas, but the bird
pictured here just arrived at Fresh Pond, and last winter one
spent several weeks on the Pond.
The winter plumage
of the common loon is much less distinct
than the striking black and white markings seen in summer.
The large bill and white around the neck are persistent field marks.
Most loons spend their summers in northern lakes, and their
winters off the coast in salt water.
