Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata)
This year the large hickory tree in front of Neville Place is loaded
with nuts. The green husks will eventually begin to dry and crack open,
exposing the hard nuts. Most will be eaten by squirrels and other animals,
but a few will be buried by animals and forgotten. This method of dispersal
and planting of seeds is utilized by many nut trees.
