Ice Cutting at Fresh Pond, 1853
Pond ice was manually cut into blocks with large saws, pulled to shore by horses, and dragged up wooden ramps to the loading doors of the enormous ice houses shown in the background. When insulated with sawdust, the ice could be stored in the houses for several years.
